Generative Engine Optimization.
Be the source the answer is built from.

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making a brand one of the sources an AI assistant draws on when it generates an answer, rather than a page a person has to click. It covers entity clarity, structured data, retrieval-friendly content and citations in the sources the models read. Bonsai Marketing runs GEO programs for local service companies in Sonoma County and for multi-location and national brands across the United States, measured monthly across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Mode.

[ 01 · Why it matters ]

The case for
getting this right.

01

A generated answer names a handful of sources and stops. There is no page two. If the model does not already associate your brand with the category and the place, you are not in the answer, and the person asking never sees a list you could have ranked on.

02

The models retrieve from a different mix than Google's ten blue links: directories, review platforms, video, forums, publications and clearly structured pages. Ranking well on Google helps, but it is not the same job and it is not enough on its own.

03

Entity clarity compounds. Once the models consistently resolve your name to one company, one location and one set of services, every new mention reinforces it. Ambiguity, such as a same-name company in another state, does the opposite and is expensive to unwind later.

[ 02 · What you get ]

What ships.
No scope drift.

Every engagement ships these. If it is listed below, it is part of the work.
01 Entity audit: how each model currently describes you, what it confuses you with, and where it sends people instead
02 Knowledge Graph and structured-data build: Organization, Service, Person, FAQ and location markup bound to one canonical entity
03 llms.txt and llms-full.txt, written and maintained as the site changes
04 Retrieval-ready content: answer blocks, definitions and FAQs the models can quote verbatim
05 Citation program in the sources the models actually read for your category
06 Monthly GEO scorecard across five AI platforms, with a written read on what moved and why
[ 03 · What we measure ]

Activity is easy.
Outcomes count.

  • → Citation share: how often you are cited across a fixed prompt set, by platform
  • → Citation order: whether you are the first source named or the fifth
  • → Recommendation vs. mention: being suggested, not just listed
  • → Sentiment and accuracy of how the models describe you

Measured on the BonsaiX platform and reported monthly. Results vary by starting position, competition and how quickly decisions get made.

[ 04 · Process ]

Four phases.
No mystery.

01 —

Baseline

A fixed set of category, comparison and local prompts run across five AI platforms. You see where you appear, where competitors appear, and what the models get wrong about you.

02 —

Entity foundation

Structured data, llms.txt, Knowledge Graph completion and the fixes that make one company resolve to one entity. This is the part most agencies skip.

03 —

Citations

Profiles, listings, publications, video and community answers in the places the models retrieve from for your category, coordinated with digital PR.

04 —

Measure and iterate

Monthly re-run of the prompt set. We double down on what moved a platform and drop what did not.

[ 05 · Engagement tiers ]

[ 07 · FAQ ]

Questions,
answered honestly.

01 How is GEO different from SEO?
+
SEO earns a position on a results page. GEO earns a place inside a generated answer. They share foundations, such as clean structure and real authority, but GEO puts far more weight on entity clarity, structured data and citations in the sources the models retrieve from, and far less on classic link volume.
02 How is GEO different from answer engine optimization (AEO)?
+
We treat them as two sides of one discipline. AEO targets the answer surfaces that quote a source directly, such as Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and voice assistants. GEO targets the assistants that synthesize an answer from several sources, such as ChatGPT and Perplexity. Most programs need both.
03 Which AI platforms do you track?
+
ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Mode, using a fixed prompt set that is re-run on a schedule so month-to-month movement is real, not noise.
04 How long before we show up in AI answers?
+
Entity and structured-data fixes usually show up in how the models describe you within one to two months. Citations for category prompts typically follow over the next one to three months, and Gemini and Perplexity tend to move last. We report the real timeline after the baseline.
05 Do you do this for businesses outside Sonoma County?
+
Yes. The studio is in Santa Rosa, California, and roughly half of GEO work is for multi-location and national brands anywhere in the United States. The method is the same; the prompt set and citation targets change.

Does Siri name you — or your competitor?

Assistants return one or two names, not a page of results. AnswerSlot reads your Google profile and your site the way an assistant reads them, asks the models the questions your customers actually ask, and shows you what came back — including the business it named instead of you.
