Agency pricing,
answered plainly

How much does an SEO agency charge per month?

Published 2026 surveys disagree substantially. Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO professionals puts the average agency retainer at $3,209/month, while Backlinko's survey of 300+ professionals found the most common tier is $501–$1,000/month and that 64% of agencies charge under $1,000. SparkToro's survey of 376 agencies found 49% charge $1,000–$5,000/month. The Agency Calculator reports this disagreement rather than averaging it away, and lowers its confidence score accordingly.

What percentage do PPC agencies charge of ad spend?

The commonly cited range is 10–20% of monthly ad spend, per WebFX's 2026 pricing guide based on a survey of 350 marketers. In practice the percentage compresses as spend rises — a $150,000/month account is not managed at the same rate as a $5,000/month account. Most agencies also apply a minimum monthly fee, so small accounts pay an effective rate well above the headline percentage.

Why does marketing agency pricing vary by city?

Two measurable forces. First, real price levels: the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis publishes Regional Price Parities showing San Francisco at 118.2 versus a national 100 and Pine Bluff, Arkansas at 80.3. Second, labor cost: BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics show marketing managers earning $235,920 in San Francisco against a $177,770 national mean, and web developers $151,450 against $98,770. An agency's cost structure is mostly salaries, so those differences flow into pricing.

What affects how much an agency should charge?

Six measurable layers: the observed market rate for the service, the geographic cost of the market, competition in the client's industry, the scope of services included, the client's business size and coverage area, and the delivery complexity of the work. The Agency Calculator applies each as a separate documented factor so any recommendation can be traced back to its inputs.

Should agency fees and ad spend be quoted together?

No. Ad spend is a pass-through cost paid to Google or Meta; the management fee is agency revenue. Combining them overstates what the agency earns and makes proposals hard to compare. The Agency Calculator always reports media spend, management fee, total client investment, and agency revenue as four separate figures.
